Centriole Formation in Early Mammalian Embryonic Development. A New Look in the Light of Recent Discoveries

Uzbekov R.

Resumo

The centrosome is a small cellular organelle with a high concentration of a large number of regulatory proteins. Being the main microtubules organization center, the centrosome is also a transport hub of the cell, from which both centrifugal and centripetal transport of protein complexes and entire organelles is carried out along microtubules by the specifi c motor proteins. Although considerable advances have been made in recent years in identifying hundreds of centrosomal proteins, the process of centrosome formation is still poorly understood. This article presents the results of a study of centrosome formation during early embryonic development.

Regulation of Gene Expression, or What Enables Genes to Operate

Maslakova A., Dolgikh V., Zemlyanskaya E.

Resumo

Genes preserve hereditary information, which is identical in all cells of the multicellular organism. Diff erent expression of genes ensures the formation of diff erent traits (for example, the formation of diff erent cell types). The mechanisms that aff ect gene expression are the subject to heavy scrutiny of research. The technological advances of the last two decades open up wide perspectives for in-depth studies of these mechanisms. In the review, we consider the reasons for the diff erent expression of the genes and the ways to measure gene activity and to determine its causes.

Volcanic Activity of the Venus Coronae

Guseva E., Ivanov M.

Resumo

This work presents the results of studying the topographic confi guration of the Venus coronae, spatially related to the manifestations of late episodes of volcanism — lobate plains. It has been established that coronae are relatively rarely associated with young volcanism. However, those that are spatially related to the lobate plains are long-lived complexes, and their volcanism is confi ned to the fi nal phases of activity.

Where Is Titanium Hiding? Structure of a Potentially New Mineral from the Vesuvianite Group

Rastsvetaeva R., Aksenov S.

Resumo

Minerals of the Vesuvianite group are complex ortho-diortho silicates of Са, Al, Fe, and some other elements. Vesuvianite with 5.85 wt. % of TiO2, from the Shigar Valley in northern Pakistan, has been investigated by means of the X-ray structural analysis and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Tetragonal unit-cell parameters are a = 15.5326(2), c =11.8040(2) Å, space group, P4/nnc. It has been established that Ti does not occupy the Y1-site as was previously believed, but is found in the octahedral site Y3, together with Al, Fe2+, and Fe3+. The role of the Y1 site in the diversity of vesuvianite-group minerals is discussed.

The Journey of the Soil Monolith

Plekhanova L.

Resumo

In 2023, a soil monolith was brought from the Orenburg steppe to Moscow. It is made according to the author’s special methodology and is convenient for display in any museum. It was solemnly presented to the Department of Soil Science of the Lomonosov Moscow State University as a gift to the 50th anniversary of the Department from the Institute of Physico-Chemical and Biological Problems of Soil Science of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Pushchino, Russia). The article describes the technology and history of the creation of this monolith.

Subwavelength Optics, or How to Observe what is “Forbidden” by Physical Laws

Tribelsky M.

Resumo

Is it possible to manipulate an electromagnetic field pattern on a much smaller scale than the wavelength of the incident radiation? The answer is, Yes! It turns out that the solution to such a problem does not go against the principles of optics that limit the size of a light spot to half the wavelength of the incident radiation. We explain how to achieve this, and provide examples to illustrate the concept. We also discuss the latest applications of this new technique and its future potential.

“I Tried to Look for the Roots of Phenomena”. To the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Academician E. E. Milanovsky

Tveritinova T.

Resumo

July 2023 marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of E. E. Milanovsky, an outstanding Russian geologist, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, professor, who for many years presided over the Department of Historical and Regional Geology and the Department of Geology of Russia at the Geological Faculty of the Lomonosov Moscow State University. He belonged to a cohort of brilliant scholars of the second half of the 20th — early 21st centuries, and his scientifi c contribution to geology is widely recognized not only on national level, but also on global scale. The article provides a brief overview of the scientifi c and popular science works of Milanovsky, the author of many articles in the journal “Priroda”.
