Ancient Hominid Footprints

Sudarikova E.

Аннотация

Anthropologists manage to extract information from the most insignificant objects found in ancient sites. One tooth or one phalanx of a finger can help to determine the species and gender of hominids; DNA, extracted from the soil, can show which humans or pre-humans inhabited this particular site at different time periods; a tiny piece of tartar can clear up the food preferences of its owner and whether the food was processed on fire. The article considers the seven most famous finds of hominid footprints in volcanic ash.

Rogue Waves: Myths and Reality

Slunyaev A., Pelinovsky E.

Аннотация

The article provides an overview of a dangerous natural phenomenon, the unexpected appearance of unusually high waves on the sea surface (the so-called rogue waves). The differences of such waves from the ordinary gravitational waves generated by the wind, as well as the theoretically-based probability of high waves occurrence are explained. The main assumptions incorporated into the existing models for forecasting wind waves are presented in the simple, reader-friendly format; their weakness for sufficient explanation of the appearance of rogue waves is shown. The relationship between rogue waves and key solutions to the approximate equations of hydrodynamics (solitons, envelope solitons, and breathers) is discussed; an ambiguous view on the role of the effects of nonlinear self-modulation of waves in the open ocean is considered. A general hypothetical concept for forecasting wind waves in the ocean is presented; new approaches for wave forecasting that take into account the effect of rogue waves are discussed.

Dolgaya Spit — a Unique Natural Object of the Sea of Azov

Matishov G., Stepanyan O., Khoroshev O., Grigorenko K., Savitsky R.

Аннотация

The article describes the nature and history of the Dolgaya Spit, as well as the results of the expedition organized by the Russian Geographical Society in June—July 2021. Aerial photography of the Dolgaya Spit has been carried out; morphometric parameters of the coastal shafts that form the accumulative body of the spit have been measured. The field of currents and the thermohaline structure of waters have been studied in the marine water area of the Dolgaya Spit. The structure of various parts of the Dolgaya Spit, as well as the composition of modern and fossil (from cores and coastal sediments) mollusks have been studied; shell material for the radiocarbon-determination of the absolute age of coastal shafts has been sampled. Bird observations revealed that plastic garbage is the leading factor affecting the state of bird populations, including rare species. Archaeological finds on the islands of the Dolgaya Spit have shown the possibility of their transfer by currents from the destroyed monuments of the indigenous coast. Numerous landfills in wild camping areas have been identified; the erosion and scouring of the landfills of the 1950s and 1960s has been recorded.

On the Olenek River — 500 Kilometers by Oars, or One Field Season in the Life of Geologists

Spetsius Z.

Аннотация

The article is devoted to a field expedition organized with the aim of re-evaluating the diamond content of the northern fields of the Yakutsk diamond province. The task was to search for kimberlite bodies in four kimberlite fields, discovered and tested by pits or wells in the 1970s. To assess diamond content according to mineralogical criteria, it was necessary to sample kimberlites and wash out the heavy fraction of indicator minerals. These kimberlite fields were located in the Olenek River Basin, and all the fieldwork was carried out by three specialists on two rubber boats without a motor, which made the rafting less fast, although less expensive. The article is organized in the form of a field diary. It reports the movement along the route with a description of all the twists and turns of this difficult but fascinating journey and the characteristics of certain types of the unique nature of Yakutia.

In the Crater of a Volcano During an Eruption

Belousov A., Belousova M.

Аннотация

Volcanology is one of the few modern sciences, where a researcher should be in a good physical form and have the courage and skills to work in harsh natural environments. All these features make up a romantic aureole for the science of volcanology. Heroic or, more precisely pseudo-heroic and athletic components of volcanology often attracts people that are far from science. The paper describes the most famous descents in the craters of erupting volcanoes that were conducted at the beginning of the XXth century — Stromboli (Italy) in 1914 and Mihara (Japan) in 1933. Also, examples of later real scientific works of Russian and foreign volcanologists are considered.

King of Silurian, Devonian, and Permian. On the 150th Anniversary of the Death of Sir Roderick Impey Murchison

Komarov V., Kochtygov N.

Аннотация

Sir Roderick Impey Murchison is one of the largest geologist and naturalist of the XIX century. He worked during the so-called heroic period of stratigraphy, when the main systems of the Phanerozoic were established. In 1835, R.I.Murchison described the Silurian system, in 1839, together with A.Sedgwick, he identified the Devonian system, and, finally, in 1841, he justified the independence of the Permian system, the world standard of which is many geological sections of the Ural-Kama region. Sir Murchison compared a lot of sections of particular regions of England and other countries of Europe and North America. R.I.Murchison created the first geological map and described the geological structure of European Russia and the Urals. R.I.Murchison’s large monographs are essentially a synthesis of all the facts and generalizations that were known at that time and which were brilliantly analyzed and supplemented by his own research. These works brought to R.I.Murchison worldwide fame and made him one of the largest experts on these issues of geology. Brief information about the biography of the scientist as well as his scientific and social activities is given.

Joule—Lenz Law: Faces, Ideas, and Experiments

Bulyubash B.

Аннотация

The history of the discovery of the law of heating effect of an electric current is considered. The contribution of two authors of the law— the English physicist James Joule and the Russian physicist Emilia Lenz — is compared. For both Joule and Lenz, the establishment of the law was preceded by a period of fascination with designing electric motors. It is emphasized that for Joule the discovery of the law of heating effect of an electric current was the beginning of experiments to determine the mechanical equivalent of heat. Joule’s experiments with induction currents were of great importance for understanding the law of heating effect of a current. Joule’s active participation in the work of scientific societies is noted.
