Abstract

The new mineral rossovskyite (Fe3+,Ta)(Nb,Ti)O4 from the tantalum-niobate family was discovered in granite pegmatites of Altai Mountains in Western Mongolia. Topologically the structure of rossovskyite is analogous to that of ixiolite with the same cell-structure, but differs in cations ordering with a decrease in symmetry from orthorhombic one with the Pbcn space group to monoclinic with the P2/c space group. Although they display substantial common features, these minerals belonging to the tantalum-niobate family vary in cell size, symmetry, and cation ordering; some of them serve as a source of niobium and tantalum. This article describes the study and discovery of the mineral rossovskyite and describes related minerals of the tantalum-niobate family.
