The Phenomenon of Nikolai Koltsov

Vasiliev A.

摘要

The beginning of the last century in Russia was replete with outstanding representatives of science and art, and biologist N.K.Koltsov has a special place among them. His uniqueness manifested in outlining the path that the entire biological science took in the next century. The modern interdisciplinarity of biology is based on the results of long_terms studies and the amazing insight of N.K.Koltsov.

N.K.Koltsov and the Russian Eugenics Movement

Pchelov E.

摘要

The article is dedicated to the key role of the great Russian biologist N.K.Koltsov in the organization of scientific research in eugenics and the creation of the eugenics movement in Soviet Russia in the 1920s. Born in England at the beginning of the 20th century, Eugenics as the science of improving the human race became very popular in many countries. In Russia, it received opportunities for rapid development after the Revolution of 1917, which placed on the agenda the question of creating a new, perfect man of a new society. One of the founders of genetics in Russia, N.K.Koltsov, created a Eugenic Department at the Institute of Experimental Biology, headed the Russian Eugenics Society and the Russian Eugenics Journal. He was the author of program works in the field of eugenics and a plan for extensive eugenic research conducted as cross-disciplinary research in biological and human sciences. He was able to attract leading experts in the field of genetics, anthropology, medicine, experimental biology, jurisprudence, historical genealogy, etc. to the eugenics movement. The formed unique scientific association carried out a number of outstanding studies that have not lost their scientific significance yet. An active popularization and propaganda of eugenics in society led, among other things, to vide introduction of these ideas into the pages of literary works. During the years of the Great Turn of the 1920s and 1930s, the eugenics movement in Russia was disbanded for ideological reasons. However, eugenics has become the scientific basis for successfully developing human genetics.

Beyond the Genes... Non Canonical Action of Classical Neurotransmitters

Voronezhskaya E.

摘要

The discovery of the DNA structure — the molecular matrix for genetic information — is one of the greatest in the last century. It gave hope to mankind that soon we would reveal the deepest secrets of development, understand the background of biological diversity, and find the way to overcome hereditary diseases. Indeed, many of these hopes met and even exceeded our expectations. However, a deeper understanding of the mechanisms underlying the activity of the genetic apparatus led to recognition of the complexity and ambiguousness of the functioning of the DNA-RNA-protein chain. If we return to the works of our great compatriot Nikolai Konstantinovich Koltsov, we’ll find out that many of his predictions and doubts, expressed on the basis of careful observations and deep analyzes, have received factual confirmation nowadays. Our studies on the role of serotonin, a classical signal mediator (neurotransmitter) between the cells of the nervous system, have shown that the expression of the genetic developmental program can be altered by both external factors and the internal state of the maternal organism. Serotonylation — posttranslational protein modification — occurs in embryonic pluripotent cells and represents an epigenetic mechanism that allows modification of developmental and behavioral programs in genetically related individuals. Our results add another regulatory mechanism to the chain of events that runs from the moment of gene activation to the realization of its effect at the organism level. In addition to other epigenetic mechanisms, the non-canonical action of neurotransmitters may introduce phenotypic diversity into the principle of “matrix information transfer” postulated by N.K.Koltsov and ensure adaptation of the organism to environmental conditions.

The Fruit Fly for Searching for Genes and Mechanisms that Control Cytoskeleton Structure

Simonova O.

摘要

Studies of regulatory factors and biochemical properties of the actin cytoskeleton are being successfully carried out in vitro on models or using cell cultures. However, the function of such factors in vivo, when they participate in development of incredible variety of cytoskeleton structure of the organism, remains not clear. To fully understand forms and functions of cytoskeleton structures, it is necessary, firstly, to compose a complete list of factors that regulate the assembly of structures, secondly, to determine the spatiotemporal mechanism which coordinates the activity of these factors, and thirdly, to specify the influence of these regulator factors and subordinated structures on the dynamics of development. This review considers innovative techniques that have made the fruit fly a powerful tool in the study of these issues.

Genius in the Shadow: Russian Biologist Nikolai Koltsov

Ramensky E., Ptushenko V.

摘要

Nikolai Konstantinovich Koltsov was an experimentalist, theorist, teacher, organizer of science, publisher of scientific literature, and popularizer of science who overcame national and political barriers. He created a strong and well-known Russian School of experimental physical and chemical biology. Koltsov discovered the internal cytoskeleton in animal cells. He owns the first hypothesis about the biological matrix of the hereditary apparatus, its copying and abrupt changes. He pioneered the concept of epigenetics. Under the communist regime, Koltsov remained a supporter of the freedom of scientific creativity. He stood for diplomacy and at the same time firmness in defending science from charlatans. The very existence of academicians N.K.Koltsov and N.I.Vavilov was an obstacle for development of Lysenkoism. What is more, both scientists paid for their viewpoints with their lives.
