The appearance of the first Western European map of the Moscow State is associated with the activities of the Italian humanist Paolo Giovio. The «Map of Giovio» contains a significant amount of reliable information about Russia, which until then was not available in the West. Its title attributes the information it contains to Dmitry Gerasimov, who was the head of the Russian embassy, who visited Rome in 1525. It seems more plausible that Gerasimov actually owns only part of this data. According to one of the researchers, the «Map of Giovio» was based on «an earlier model» unknown to us. In this regard, the author of the article dwells on two topics. First, he finds and analyzes material that sheds light on Giovio’s ideas about the geography of Muscovy in 1515. Secondly, the article shows that one of the sources used in the work of Albert Pigius «New Muscovy» (1523) was an unknown map, akin to the one that later fell into the hands of Paolo Giovio.
