Abstract
Toponymy plays an important role in understanding the plots of the Icelandic family sagas. The meaning of most Icelandic place names was transparent to the saga audience and gave additional characterization to the persons. In this regard, in the Russian tradition of publishing of the Icelandic family sagas, starting from the second half of the 20th century, it is customary not to transliterate the Icelandic place-names proper, but to give their translation. This article deals with some aspects of such a translation. Referring to the medieval Icelandic historical work “The Book of the Settlements” (Landnámabók), which includes, among other things, toponymic legends and þaettir, helps to clarify some ambiguous cases.
