Abstract

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) was first used in 1938, but even today this biological method of treatment does not lose its relevance in clinical practice and is used in the treatment of various mental illnesses. This article discusses the advantages of using ultrashort pulses during the ECT procedure compared to the short-pulse technique. It is known that short currents used in ECT devices can cause cognitive impairment in patients. In this regard, in recent years, ECT with ultrashort pulses has been introduced as an alternative. This review is based on a comprehensive analysis of modern scientific materials, including peer-reviewed articles from international (Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science) and Russian (eLibrary, CyberLeninka) databases. The conducted data analysis shows that the use of ultrashort pulses during the ECT procedure reduces the incidence of cognitive impairment in patients and is also better tolerated, which determines the relevance of further study of the effectiveness and safety of using ECT with ultrashort currents in psychiatric patients.
