The journal continues the series «Data of Glaciological Studies» that was started in 1961 by the Section of Glaciology of the Geophysical Committee at the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences (now the Russian Academy of Sciences – RAS). During this period 500 copies of the journal were printed for each of 108 issues, each containing about 240 pages. More than 250 copies were sent abroad, to libraries of leading glaciological organizations and many universities. This series became rather popular among professional Russian glaciologists.

The journal “Ice and Snow” was established in 2010 by Russian Academy of Sciences according to a decree of the RAS Presidium as a continuation of the above mentioned series. In 2014 the Russian Geographical Society became co-founder of the journal and partly finances it. Among authors of the journal are scientists from academic institutes and many universities as well as our foreign colleagues. The journal includes invited papers from authors making important contributions at related professional conferences and symposiums.
