NATIONAL EDUCATION IN THE CENTRAL ASIAN PERIPHERY OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE AS AN OBJECT OF ACCULTURATION

Vasilyev D.V., Lyubichankovskiy S.V.

Abstract

Starting the civilization development of the Kazakh steppe at the end of the 18th century, the Russian Empire took the main role to Islam. It hoped to extend to the region the Tatar model of intercultural and interconfessional interaction, which showed its effectiveness in internal Russia. A special role in the cultural development of the region was assigned to public education. The government was confident that local children would actively attend regular Russian schools. But that did not happen. The government was forced to change tactics from the support of Islam to the protection of the population (especially nomadic) from its influence. But even in the new conditions, the Muslim school still remained a successful competitor to Russian educational institutions. The acculturational influence of the Russian education in the Turkestan and Steppe Governorates General was minimal. The fears of the Muslim resistance held back the transformation of the traditional confessional school in the state interest, and the sluggish imperial bureaucracy turned out to be unarmed in front of the new method maktabs which had taken on the Kulturtrager function.

THE SPLIT OF THE MENSHEVIST PARTY IN 1918

Kostyaev E.V.

Abstract

The article provides a detailed analysis of the fierce discussions between the leaders of the «internationalist» and «defensist» trends of the Menshevik party, which took place before and after the Bolsheviks came to power. The author argues that these discussions seriously prevented the Mensheviks from uniting against Communist dictatorship established at the end of 1917, from occupying a more influential position as a single monolithic structure in the new revolutionary government and, ultimately, led to the final split of Menshevism after that its leaders were doomed to the role of powerless and almost tacit opposition to the Bolshevik rulers.

ON SOME ASPECTS OF THE «LAW OF ALIENATION» IN HISTORY

Filatov T.V.

Abstract

The article considers a variant of applying the philosophical category of alienation to the historical process. According to the «law of alienation», power through the institutionalization of activity turns it from free to alienated, that ultimately leads to the alienation of the subjects of activity (people) from power, which in democratic societies is generated by the people themselves, and then and then turns into an external coercive force which opposes them. In this case, any activity, turning from free to alienated, tends to turn into a simulation, and the acting subject turns into a simulacrum, a copy of the non-existent original. When simulation as a form of alienated activity becomes total, all activity actually ceases, society degrades and eventually ceases to exist.

APPLICATION OF DISCRIMINANT ANALYSIS TO STUDY THE PECULIARITIES OF THE FUNCTIONING OF THE MESOLITHIC AND NEOLITHIC SITES OF THE UPPER AND MIDDLE KAMA REGION

Demakov D.A., Lychagina E.L., Mitroshin E.N.

Abstract

The authors conducted verification of 21 Mesolithic and 28 Neolithic sites of the region. They choose the following characteristics as the main metric indicators: the area of the site, the height of the location above the water level, and the thickness of the cultural layer. The authors conducted a discriminant analysis of the selected groups of sites. The result of correct classification is 69.4%, which can be considered as satisfactory. The authors identified groups of Mesolithic and Neolithic sites with the highest percentages of belonging to groups. Based upon, it was possible to calculate the average metric characteristics for each group of sites. The Mesolithic sites in average have an area of 3,300 m², are located at height of 15 m above the level of water reservoir, and have a cultural layer thickness of 0.2 m. These characteristics correspond to 17 of the 21 sites. The Neolithic settlements in average have an area of more than 16,000 m², are located at height of 6 m above the water level and have a cultural layer thickness of 0.8 m. The 17 of 28 Neolithic settlements correspond to these average characteristics. Discriminant analysis showed that four Mesolithic sites have Neolithic features according to the selected criteria. Five Neolithic sites have both Neolithic and Mesolithic features. The most interesting is the group of six Neolithic sites, which were classified as Mesolithic with a probability of almost 70%. Most of them belong to the early Neolithic. Consequently, the settlements of the Early Neolithic by many criteria do not differ from the sites of the Late Mesolithic. The period of the Late Mesolithic - Early Neolithic must be considered as a single epoch when the neolitization process was going on in the region. Discriminant analysis has proved that there is real correlation between the metric indices of the archaeological site and its age.
