Abstract
Today the economy of developed countries is characterized by scientific and technological advance as well as globalization of economic relations and possibilities. In a situation of the world competition countries seek markets for their goods and services. In many countries the transition to market economy caused regional inequalities, which can be overcome with the help of adequate programs of social and economic development. Nowadays, however, due to the lack of goals, effective evaluation and mechanisms of regional policy implementation, regional development has a controversial nature.
