Total saliva radical scavengers: photometric assay

Abstract
The method for determination of total antioxidant capacity of oral fluid (mixed saliva) has been developed. Dipyridyl served as an optical indicator reagent. The validity of the method was proved by theoretical calculations; by the data concerned the the capacity of such radical scavangers as querticin, morin, rutin and trolox to inactivate the active forms of oxygen as well as by measuring of their ferric-reduction ability. This methodical approach has allowed to confirm the literary data connected with sum antioxidants in human and rat serum (1,73 and 0,54 mM, accordingly). With help of this method the effective antioxidant concentration in saliva of volunteers (age 19-26 yeas old: female and male )was determined in ranges 0-0.6 mM as trolox Its average value appeared to be 6-fold lower than that of human plasma and 2-fold lower than that of rat serum.
