KHLEBNAYA SQUARE AS A STARTING POINT OF THE CULTURAL LANDSCAPE FRAMEWORK OF THE CITY OF SAMARA. UNVEILING THE POTENTIAL TO CREATE A HISTORICAL, ARCHITECTURAL AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK

Khramova M.Y., Dmitry D.Y.

Abstract

The concept of developing the territory called «Khlebnaya Square» and creating a historical, architectural and archaeological park is based on the phenomenon of the city cultural landscape. The analysis of existing public spaces helped to reveal the potential of the territorial cultural landscape and its framework. By the potential we mean unrealized or lost diversity of this territory. We identified the points and limits of historical identity chronologically expressed in locations of different objects and spaces. Moreover, the concept is based on the most consistent and significant component of the cultural landscape, which is a unique natural and geographical trait of the territory. The aim is to find new meanings of the rivers in the city overcoming the problems of abandoned waterfront areas, to use the vital resources of nature to develop the citadel in a new way, to recreate green comfortable public spaces.

MONUMENTS OR PROVOCATIONS: THE ROLE OF OBJECTS OF ARCHITECTURE OF THE SOVIET AVANT-GARDE IN EVOLUTION OF THE POST-SOVIET CITY OF SAMARA

Buss S.K.

Abstract

The construction of the early Socialist society found architectural expression in the Russian city of Samara in several new domineering buildings, such as the House of Industry (eng. V.K. Sukhov, arch. V. Klochkov, 1929-33, reconstructed in 1961), the House of Telecommunications (arch. E.S. Sorokina, 1930-38) and the canteen for the Maslennikov factory (arch. E.N. Maksimova, 1930-32). However, these buildings of the Samara avant-garde have lost their raison d’être in the postsocialist reality, unfit for modern requirements or simply in terrible condition. This article is concerned with proposals for the revitalisation of these buildings and especially their role in the urban fabric. The aim is not to create dead monuments but rather living organs in the social and cultural life of the city.

URBAN SPACE

NATURAL CITY - THE EXPERIENCE OF SCIENTIFIC AND PROJECT DEVELOPMENT

Repina E.A., Malakhov S.A., Gnilomedov A.S., Malysheva S.G., Lashchenko S.V., Zakharchenko M.A., Romanova D.N., Lopatina L.E.

Abstract

What are the dreams of a real city connected with? The city should be active, beautiful, comfortable, distinctive and beneficial to all subjects of urban life. The main idea of research undertaken by us was the fact that only a historical city can be used as a good example of a real city, which can then be transferred to the territory of a pseudo-city (districts with mass residential development). But before doing this we need to protect the historical environment from irrational intrusion as well as to strengthen its own resources.

WATER IN URBAN REGENERATION: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES AROUND SOME MAJOR METROPOLITAN PROJECTS

Brun A., Maléfant L.

Abstract

Rivers, see fronts, bays and estuaries have always been considered the best places for living (for commercial, military or religious reasons). Therefore, most of the main cities in the world are built around waterfronts. Nowadays, cities are reevaluating their relations with water and tend to enhance their waterfronts through urban renewal. Many embankments are created, in particular in the US and UK. A more experimental type of projects, which has been developing for the last 10 years, concerns rehabilitation of small urban rivers. We mean the rivers that disappeared in the XIXth century as they were considered to be dangerous from the hygienic point of view since they could accelerate the spread of diseases, and they could cause floods as well. Lyon is a good example of this evolution. Its small rivers are subject to urban and ecological renewal. The article states that Samara, which is situated at the confluence of the Volga River and the Samara River, can benefit from its geographic assets which can increase the value of the whole city within the scope of the project at a territorial scale.

Abstract

The purpose of this work is the theoretical study of a residential district within the scope of a human science. The research reveals philosophical categories which form the basis of the study of a residential district structure as the environment forming the life of certain groups of people. The main issues discussed in the article are as follows: Who is standard construction planned for? Why aren’t personal features considered in the system of standard housing development? How can the subject live in outer-subject architecture? What is the most suitable architecture for living? What functions should a building have to be called a house?

CITY IN MOTION

ASPECTS OF SHAPING. NATURAL FORM OF THE ENVIRONMENT. THE UNKNOWN AS A BEAUTY FACTOR

Malakhov S.A.

Abstract

The creative activity of an architect is constantly being followed by the unknown, but it is not always recognized as the value. The article connects the concept of «natural beauty» with the respect for the unknown when the activity resembles the game of chess in which the plans of the partner are unknown, but the game has its esthetic scenario. Unlike chess, in any architectural model the unknown does not reduce the quantity of the elements involved in modeling, it adds more of them making their collision a consciously chosen genre. The article describes the experiment with the quarter No. 46 in Samara published in «Architecture of the USSR» in 1985. In this experiment, carried out in the genre of an org-activity game, participants of the project have acquired the quality of the natural historical environment due to dividing the roles, holding a subsequent dialogue, overcoming the conflict with the help of special compromise models.

THE PROBLEMS OF TERRITORY DEVELOPMENT AND THE BINARY ORGANIZATION OF ITS FORM

Malakhov S.A., Adamova E.A.

Abstract

The article presents analysis of the spontaneous development of urban locales and the possible influence of form and structure on this process. The form of boundaries acts as the primary and fundamental element for the self-identification of territory. It is important to select the size and opposition of projects through the cultural dialectic ‘top-down’ vs. ‘bottomup’. The historical environment of the city blocks of Samara offers instruction for new experiments in the creation of territories for spontaneous development on new urban sites.

MODERN MASS HOUSING PROBLEMS AND THE ROLE OF SLUMS

Repina E.A., Gaydina V.S.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to investigate the problems of a typical panel micro-district, which offers residents a very low quality of environment. Imperceptible deterioration of living standards in residential districts leads to the fact that people almost never think about such problems as the lack of capital repairs of apartment buildings. However, public authorities are not concerned about researching the quality of housing, and construction companies build new micro-districts similar to the Soviet ones where residents were not treated as consumers. All people were middle class. The micro-district structure collapsed together with the collapse of the Soviet Union. In the world there exists the practice of block development, planning restrictions are abandoned so that people can decide for themselves what the block in which they live should be like.

INVESTIGATION OF LANGUAGES OF NON-PROFESSIONAL ARCHITECTURE CONSIDERED ON THE EXAMPLE OF QUARTERS IN THE HISTORICAL PART OF SAMARA

Repina E.A., Romanova D.N.

Abstract

Nowadays the problem of the destruction of historical Samara is particularly current. From the authors’ point of view, naturally established historical environment possesses hidden resources. Their implementation could have a positive impact on urban area development revealing territory potential and forming a positive image of the city both for tourists and citizens. Being a source of cultural senses anonymous architecture could become such a resource. This paper examines the specificity of semiotics of self-built architecture in the historical part of the city. The research was made within the student’s project. The street fragment and adjoined quarters in the historical part of the city were chosen as an object of study.

DECRIMINALIZATION OF ARCHITECTURAL ENVIRONMENT

Polyantseva E.R.

Abstract

It is always necessary to consider the safety of architectural environment at the first stage of design work as safety is the basic human need and the main distinctive feature of the structures used by people. It is possible for contemporary architecture to achieve social success only if the the safe environment is created and the existing problems with safety are eliminated.
