REVOLUTION, RUSSOPHOBIA AND «THE RED THREAT» IN THE PERCEPTION OF THE US SOCIETY

Buranok S.O.

Abstract

The study of Russophobia in the United States is a topical and promising trend of contemporary historical studies; it has not only academic, but also practical and political importance. Analysis of the genesis of this phenomenon, its development, and transformation helps to estimate its impact on American politics and society in different historical periods, including the present. Special attention is paid to the connection of this phenomenon with the foreign policy of the United States, when, after the Revolution of 1917, and then with the outbreak of the Cold War, anti-Russian sentiments of the government and society became an integral part of the official policy. In the world and national historiography, the topic of Russophobia in the United States was studied only in the context of general confrontation between two countries in different times, or as a part of imagological studies of Russian-American relations, but never attracts close attention of researchers.

MALAYA GORKA II - NEW MESOLITHIC SETTLEMENT OF THE POLUDENSKY PEAT BOG (MIDDLE TRANS-URALS)

Serikov Y.B.

Abstract

A settlement Malaya Gorka II is a newly discovered Mesolithic site on the territory of the Middle Urals. It is located at the valley side of Poludenskij peat which is widely known in the archeological science of the Urals. V.A. Arefyev, a student of the author, conducted reconnaissance excavations in a settlement in 1991. As a result, a representative collection of stone products of the Mesolithic epoch was discovered. After the premature death of the V.A. Arefyev, the collection of finds remained unclaimed for a long time. This publication is intended to expand the source database for the Mesolithic of the Middle Trans-Urals and introduce new materials. The collection of findings contains all the main types of stone products: nucleuses, technical chips, plates with retouching and without it, cutters, carvers, points, scrapers, polished chopping tools, flakes. A geometric microlite in the form of a symmetrical trapezoid is a rare finding. The author describes technology of stone splitting, as well as the mineral base of the settlement. The presence of a housing depression on the settlement, as well as the high saturation of the layer (up to 80 products per square meter), allows us to consider it as the basic Mesolithic settlement of the Poludenskij peat bog.

BOUNDARY OF PRE-URAL AND URAL-MUGODZHARY MINING AND METALLURGICAL CENTERS OF THE LATE BRONZE AGE: HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTENT, PHYSICAL AND GEOGRAPHICAL CONDITIONALITY

Tkachev V.V.

Abstract

The paper deals with the problem of determining the objective criteria for establishing the boundary of the Pre-Ural and Ural-Mugodzhary mining and metallurgical centers of the Late Bronze Age. From the point of view of geomorphology, the transboundary territory was formed at the contact of the Permian and Devonian Paleozoic systems. The different nature of copper mineralization within the discussed historical and metallurgical formations is determined by confining to different geological structures. The Pre-Ural and Ural-Mugodzhary mining and metallurgical centers were correlated historically and culturally with the metal-producing activities of the carriers of the West-Alakul and Kozhumberdy Cultural Groups, whose contact zone corresponded to the demarcation line between the Syrtovo-Pre-Ural and Central South Ural physic-geographical provinces. Orographic and hydrographic elements of natural territorial complexes dictated the choice of adaptation strategies. Economic and cultural models combining mobile cattle breeding with mining and metallurgical production were based on the ability of steppe and mountain-steppe geosystems to regenerate while preserving the ecological function; that models were formed within the separate physical and geographical divisions.
