Abstract
The presented literature review is devoted to the issues of diagnostics and treatment of avascular necrosis of the sesamoid bones (AVN), or Renander-Müller disease. This disease is relatively rare and affects mainly active young people. The combination of these two factors leads to diagnostic difficulties, persistent impairment of the patient's activity and a high rate of disability. We did not find any publications devoted to this disease in the Russian-language literature. The electronic databases PubMed, Medline, Scopus, Google Scholar, eLIBRARY were used to search for literature. The review included 47 publications. The search was carried out based on the presence of the following keywords, their derivatives and combinations in the titles and abstracts: "avascular necrosis of the sesamoid", "sesamoid AVN", "hallucial sesamoid disorders", "Renander-Müller disease", "osteonecrosis", "sesamoidectomy", "sesamoid". An initial screening for inclusion criteria was performed on article titles and abstracts, followed by an analysis of full-text publications. Sources for which full-text versions were not available were excluded from the analysis.
