The article briefly covers the scientific, pedagogical and creative activities of Vladimir Olegovich Samoilov, whose life and fate have been associated with his alma mater for more than six decades. May 7, 2021 Vladimir Olegovich Samoilov turned 80 years old. Vladimir Olegovich — Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, Retired Major General of the Medical Service, Honorary Doctor of the Military Medical Academy named after S.M. Kirov. Vladimir Olegovich made a significant contribution to the emergence of an independent scientific discipline in medical universities of the country — medical biophysics, which began to study the fundamental problems of metabolism and bioenergetics at the molecular, cellular and systemic levels. Samoilov developed original training courses in biophysics and medical electronics and headed the Department of Medical Physics for 14 years. Together with the staff of the department, he revived and rebuilt the teaching of higher mathematics and general physics at the Academy on the basis of the deductive method. Since 1974 Biophysics is taught at the Military Medical Academy named after S.M. Kirov as a system of physical and physico-chemical processes underlying life activity. In 1988, V.O. Samoilov was appointed Deputy Head of the Academy for Academic and Scientific Work. In the next six years, under his leadership, the system of basic military medical education was restructured. In 2001 Vladimir Olegovich headed the Department of Normal Physiology. During the difficult time of the change of generations, the department reorganized the educational process and resumed scientific research on the main sections of normal physiology. He formed one of the brightest scientific academic schools, which consists of seven doctors and 22 candidates of science.

May 7, 2021 marks the 80th anniversary of the corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Honorary Doctor of the Military Medical Academy named after S. M. Kirov, Major General of the Medical Service, retired Vladimir Samoilov.
The life, fate and activities of Vladimir Olegovich for more than six decades are associated with the Alma mater, to the development and prosperity of which he made a significant contribution.
Vladimir Olegovich was born in the terrible pre-war period in Gorky in the family of a military doctor, who served him all his life as a moral example of life, creativity and attitude to military service. The frequent moves of the family to new places of service taught my father not to be afraid of difficulties and troubles, hardened his character and shaped his thoughts to become a military doctor. In 1958, after graduating from school with a gold medal, Vladimir Olegovich entered the Military Medical Academy named after S. M. Kirov, where in the second year under the guidance of Professor A. S. Mozzhukhina began scientific research of language interoceptors in the scientific circle of students at the Department of Normal Physiology. He graduated in 1964. After graduating from the Academy with a gold medal, V. O. Samoilov was sent to serve in the Strategic Missile Forces and in 1965 returned to his Alma mater as a junior lecturer at his native department, where in 1968 he successfully defended his PhD thesis.
In 1974, V. O. Samoilov was appointed head of the reorganized Department of Biological and Medical Physics, where he developed and implemented the original biophysics training course for students of the S. M. Kirov Military Medical Academy. In 1980, the results of scientific research of the interoceptive analyzer allowed V. O. Samoilov to formulate the hypothesis of heterogeneity of sensory systems, the evidence of which formed the basis of his doctoral dissertation.
In the 90s of the twentieth century, Vladimir Olegovich founded and productively developed a new scientific direction – the biophysics of the living cell. Within its framework, the basic regularities of the molecular mechanisms of reactions of various cells, organs and systems to different modal environmental factors, information processes in sensory systems and excitable tissues of the body were revealed. research data from the school. In the course of scientific research, innovative technologies of television microscopy, microelectrode electrometry and cytospectrofluorimetry were tested. Reliably established by the V. O. scientific school. Samoylov phenomena formed the basis of new directions of modern biophysics of complex systems-electromagnetobiology and low-frequency bioacoustics. The designed laboratory facilities made it possible to create highly informative diagnostic methods, which were later successfully used in various areas of clinical medicine - otolaryngology, cardiology, gastroenterology, pulmonology and physiology of military labor.
From 1988 to 1994, V. O. Samoilov was the Deputy Head of the Academy for Academic and scientific work. During these years, with his active participation, the educational process was restructured, which was based on modern scientific achievements of fundamental sciences and clinical medicine, a new system of postgraduate training (internship) was introduced.
From 1994 to 1996, V. O. Samoilov was the head of the Laboratory of Biophysics of the Sensory Organs of the St. Petersburg Research Institute of Ear, Throat, Nose and Speech of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, and from 1996 to 2018, he was the head of the Laboratory of Cell Physiology and Biophysics of the I. P. Pavlov Institute of Physiology of the Russian Academy of Sciences. For three years (1996-1999), he headed the State Scientific Center of Pulmonology of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, and from 1997 to 2014. – the Faculty of Medical Physics and Bioengineering of the St. Petersburg State Technical University, organized by him. Peter the Great. During these years, for the first time in Russia, the University began training masters in the field of "medical physics".
From 2001 to 2018, V. O. Samoilov was the head of the Department of Normal Physiology of the Academy, where he reorganized the educational process and initiated original scientific research on the assessment of physiological processes in the body. The high scientific and methodological level of the work performed allowed him to become an indisputable scientific authority in Russian physiology and biophysics.
At all stages of their professional activity, V. O. Samoylova was distinguished by a high professional level combined with fundamental theoretical knowledge, patriotism and loyalty to the ideals of domestic medicine, modesty and intelligence in communicating with colleagues and students. The scientific academic school of V. O. Samoilov today consists of 7 doctors and 22 candidates of science. He has written more than 20 textbooks and manuals, published more than 200 scientific articles.
A bright stage of the ascetic activity of V. O. Samoilov is his numerous publications on the history of the Alma mater and the scientific activities of its pupils-the luminaries of Russian science-V. A. Petrov, I. M. Sechenov, I. P. Pavlov, L. A. Orbeli. An example for many employees of the academy was his active civic position when discussing the ways of development of the academy in the last decade.
Vladimir Olegovich's life path and many-sided activity have been repeatedly marked by many state awards and scientific prizes. He is an honorary doctor of a number of domestic and foreign scientific societies and institutions.
The command of the Military Medical Academy named after S. M. Kirov, numerous students and colleagues warmly and cordially congratulate V. O. Samoilov on his anniversary and wish him health, creative success and new achievements for the benefit of the Academy and national science.
