Formative Fabrication: a New Industry

Аннотация

Formative fabrication is a revolutionary manufacturing of three-dimensional structures from inorganic and organic substances, including living cells. The main idea is the use of various physical fields to provide the temporary and removable non-contact support for directed and programmable assembly of such substances. Physical fields can be magnetic, acoustic, electric or others, and can be used separately or in various combinations. This review formulates the main physical principles of the 3D assembly and fabrication, provides clear examples of successful practical application of the technology (in particular, in tissue engineering), describes the still unsettled scientific and technological issues, and outlines the main directions of future development. The role of domestic scientists in the development of this new promising and innovative technology is distinctly emphasized. The ongoing development of the proposed approach theoretically could become the basis of the next industrial revolution.

The Kerch Strait Situation

Аннотация

A study of oil pollution in the Kerch Strait in 2019–2021 revealed high concentrations of aliphatic hydrocarbons in the suspension of surface waters (91 μg/L on average), which exceeds the maximum permissible concentration for petroleum hydrocarbons (50 μg/L) and is higher than in the other parts of the Black Sea. In coarse sediments, hydrocarbon concentrations also exceeded the background values. The factor analysis revealed the pyrogenic (from transport industry) source of pollution as a dominant one, while oil pollution (from shipping industry) impact was lesser.

Bacterial Oxylipins: a Key to Multicellularity and to Combating Antimicrobial Resistance?

Oxylipins are ubiquitous in truly multicellular eukaryotes as cell-to-cell communication signals. However, their functions in bacteria are still poorly elucidated. Our recent research raises intriguing hypotheses and discussions on bacterial oxylipin signalling. The understanding of its mechanisms can, probably, not only open a new chapter in multicellularity evolution, but also provide more successful combating antimicrobial resistance. The article is dedicated to the preparation and subsequent carrying of a scientific-research Russian-Danish expedition organized in the summer of 2021 to study the chronology of the Quaternary glaciations in Eastern Siberia. It focusses on the most challenging issues of the Quaternary history of the region: the causes and extent of glaciations, the possibility of blocking of the Lena River flow, the emergence of large glacial-dammed basins, etc. The key goal of the expedition was to estimate the extent and age of the Verkhoyansk Ridge glaciations using the most modern methods of optical luminescent, cosmic isotope, and radiocarbon dating.

Elusive Oxonium

First data on Raman vibrational spectra of a series of sodium-deficient hydrated eudialyte group minerals which crystal structures were investigated earlier have been obtained. These spectra turned out to be much more sensitive to the presence of hydrated forms of oxonium than the IR spectra. They contain strong bands in the range of 1300–2800 cm–1, which, by quantum electronic calculations correspond to the O···O distances of ≈2.40–2.8 Å in hydrated eudialyte-related minerals. Thus, the presence of oxonium in eudialytes is confirmed not only by indirect, but also by the direct evidences.

Ledentsov Society and Development of Chemistry in Russia

The 180th birth anniversary of Vologda first guild merchant and philanthropist, Kh.S.Ledentsov, will be celebrated in 2022. Established in 1909 in accordance with his will, the Society for Promotion of Advancement of Experimental Sciences and Their Practical Applications provided comprehensive assistance to many scientists for eight years, which determined the development of various fields of science, including chemistry, in our country. The studies of such eminent Russian chemists as A.E.Chichibabin, N.D.Zelinsky, I.A.Kablukov, and L.A.Chugaev were implemented largely due to the support of the Ledentsov Society. The scientists were provided with all necessary things: laboratories, equipment, instruments, and reagents. The traditions and unique experience of the Ledentsov Society have not lost their relevance in the XXI century, and their study is of great importance for the development of science in Russia.
