Pre-nucleation clusters and non-classical crystal formation

Askhabov A.M.

Abstract

Peculiarities of the non-classical mechanism of the crystal nucleation, associated with the formation of stable prenucleus intermediate phase clusters in a crystal-forming medium, are considered. These clusters (quatarons) represent primary protomineral particles for which crystallization is one of the possible evolutionary scenarios. Conditions of the quataron formation and their characteristic properties are discussed. The relevance of experiments on direct observation of prenucleus clusters and other objects of the protomineral world is presented.

Lu-Hf isotope composition of zircon from syenites of the Sakharjok alkaline massif, Kola Peninsula

Vetrin V.R., Belousova E.A.

Abstract

This study examines zircon from the alkaline and nepheline syenites of the Sakharjok massif magmatic (2.645 ± 7 Ma), hydrothermal (1.832 ± 7 Ma) and metamorphic (1.784 ± 22 Ma) stages. Zircon from the alkaline syenites shows lower ɛHf and ɛNd values compared to that from ocean island basalts (OIB) suggesting their mantle-derived prololiths, are close to the CHUR in terms of isotopic composition. It is assumed that the formation of the Neoarchean alkaline Keivy province resulted from the plume-lithospheric interaction triggered by the uplift of a Neoarchean plume that stipulated the processes of metasomatic alterations and subsequent partial melting of the subcratonic lithospheric mantle and crustal rocks. The initial melts of the Sakharjok massif could probably form during the reactivation of the plume activity that occurred 20—30 million years after the emplacement of alkaline granites of the province by selective melting of the metasomatized lithospheric mantle rocks.

New Minerals

New minerals. LXXIII

Smolyaninova V.N.

Abstract

The paper displays review of new minerals published in 2018. Data for each one mineral include its crystal-chemical formula, unit cell parameters, principal physical properties, chemical composition, type locality, etymology of its name, reference of the first publishing about it. In total, the review includes data on 105 newly discovered minerals approved by the IMA. There are also references for publications dedicated to questions of classification and nomenclature of minerals, improvements of composition and structure of known mineral species.

Rare-earth minerals of carbonate veins in the Soustov massif (Kola Peninsula) as an the indicator of its ore specialization

Petrovskiy M.N.

Abstract

The article presents first results of geological, isotope-geochemical and mineralogical studies of carbonatite veins previously unknown in the Soustov massif. Veins studied have the Sm-Nd isotope composition and model age similar to rocks of the massif, indicating the common source of their formation. High contents of light lanthanides, Sr, and Nb in carbonatite veins were revealed. These elements are concentrated in bastnäesite, strontianite, monazite, and pyrochlore. The data obtained significantly expand the geochemical and ore specialization of the massif.

History of mineralogy, crystallography and petrology

On the 250th anniversary of A. von Humboldt and the 190th anniversary of his expedition to Russia

Logunova M.N., Voytekhovsky Y.L., Kotova E.L.

Abstract

The article is devoted to the 250th anniversary of Alexander von Humboldt, Honorary Member of the Russian Mineralogical Society, and the 190th anniversary of his travel to the Urals, Western Siberia and Altai. For the first time, the paper presents archival documents related to the visit of A. von Humboldt, G. Rose, and Ch. Ehrenberg to the Mining Cadet Corps in St. Petersburg and donating a mineralogical collection (252 samples) assembled during the expedition to Russia in 1829 to the Mining Museum. Scientific works, the discovery of new minerals, and the establishment of strong scientific and cultural ties between the oldest educational institutions in Berlin, Freiberg, and St. Petersburg were the important results of this trip. For several decades, the scientific results of the expedition were published in the journal of the Mining Cadet Corps — the Gornyi Zhurnal. The tradition of donation and exchange of collections connected the history of the Mining Museum and many natural science museums in Europe.

Horizons of applied mineralogy

Askhabov A.M., Kotova O.B.

Abstract

The article is devoted to the results of the 14th International Congress for Applied Mineralogy (IСАМ 2019) hosted at the V. G. Shukhov Belgorod State Technological University September 23-27, 2019, Belgorod.  The Congress became an important milestone in the history of the Commission for Applied Mineralogy of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA-CAM), determined a vector for the development of priority scientific areas, effective links between science and business in the base of the innovative economies of the world's regions, consolidated position of Russia as one of the leading countries in the field of Applied Mineralogy.
