UNPLANNED PREGNANCY AND HORMONAL CONTRACEPTION IN PATIENTS WITH TUBERCULOSIS

Mordyk A.V., Puzyreva L.V., Kravchenko E.N., Valeeva G.A.

Abstract

Unplanned pregnancy and tuberculosis are extremely unfavorable combination. Therapeutic abortion in this situation may lead to the subsequent reproductive disorders. In pulmonary tuberculosis, this problem can be exacerbated by additional factors, such as comorbidity and multimorbidity. To avoid such situations, phthisiologist and obstetrician should choose an acceptable contraceptive drug with minimal risk for the patient, enabling maintenance of reproductive health and the prevention of pregnancy during the period of active treatment. Progestin-only oral contraceptives are safe in tuberculosis, sexually transmitted infections, HIV-infection/AIDS, diabetes mellitus, complications acquired valvular diseases, epilepsy, as well as during lactation. Use of progestin-only contraceptives greatly enhances reproductive planning in women with limitations or contraindications to the use of estrogens.
