ST. PETERSBURG IN THE XVIII CENTURY: THE ROLE OF THE EMPRESSES IN THE URBAN DEVELOPMENT OF THE RUSSIAN CAPITAL

Sementsov S.V.

Abstract

It is traditionally thought that Saint Petersburg was not only founded but completely formed under the reign of Peter I between 1703 and 1724 and that the succeeding nearly 300 years in the city’s life merely perfected that which was created in those two decades. However, careful study of the urban, functional and social development of the city and its wider agglomeration shows that these old affirmations are far from historically accurate and significantly erroneous. Under Peter I, only the fundamental (initial) bases for the development of the city and its agglomeration were lain, certain basic rules for its construction were determined and original principles and relationships for town-planning and urban life were formed. Those who succeeded Peter I made a huge contribution to the comprehensive creation of St Petersburg, not only developing the basic principles laid down by Peter I but frequently radically changing them for those better and more appropriate to St Peterburg’s status. Among these great founders of 18th Century St Petersburg are the Empresses Anna Ioannovna, Elizabeth Petrovna and Catherine the Great. Their real contribution to the urban development of St Petersburg clearly remains underestimated and misunderstood.

ARCHITECTURAL ACTIVITY IN THE RUSSIAN CLASS SOCIETY

Zhogoleva A.V.

Abstract

In this article the study of the theory of architectural activity is based on the genesis of socio-cultural paradigms in the historical development of society (pre-industrial/class, industrial, post-industrial society). This allows the identification of typological bases for spatial organization and the subject analysis of architectural structures in order to define forms of co-operation among participants, to differentiate the means of architectural activity which were reflected in programs of architectural activity.

THE HERITAGE OF “SAMARA CONSTRUCTIVISM”: AN ENGLISH PERSPECTIVE

Buss S.C.

Abstract

This article presents an outsider’s perspective on the question of the value of the architectural heritage of the 1920s and 1930s in Samara - sometimes referred to as Samara Constructivism. Samara is not to be found in the major histories and critiques of Soviet architecture by non-Russian authors. Yet the work is arguably equal in quantity and interest to that in other regional cities, which have been investigated, such as Ekaterinburg. The following questions are posed: what characterises the architectural avant-garde in Samara? What relationship did the profession in Samara have with the leading architects and movements in Moscow and Leningrad? Is their work the result of the Constructivist methodology or merely skilful appropriation of a ‘constructivist’ style? This research aims to contribute towards a broader and deeper understanding of the dynamic of influence of the leading avant-garde architectural movements in the regions of the USSR.

THE VESNIN BROTHERS AND “KOLOMENGRAD” AS A PROTOTYPE OF MASS RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT

Filippov V.D.

Abstract

The analysis of documents from the history of industrialization in the Soviet Union allows us to determine the causes of the transition of the architectural studio of the Vesnin brothers from Moscow City Council (Mossovet) to the People’s Commissariat of Heavy Industry (NKTP) and to assess in terms of real figures their contribution to the creation of new facilities of Soviet industry. The history of industrialization also allows us to understand the reasons why the studio, only a very short time after beginning to work within the People’s Commissariat, turned their attention to the problem of mass housing construction. We consider the pre-war history of the construction of the I.V. Stalin settlement near Moscow, considering the planning of the settlement, the typlology of residential and public buildings constructed and their constructional and architectural characteristics. An assessment is given of the influence of the studio on pre-war residential construction.

THE EVOLUTION OF THE URBAN FIELD STUDY METHOD

Chubukina O.V.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to describe the evolution of the method of field studies in urban areas. The author, relying on her own field studies, details changes occurring in the method. Using three field studies as an example, she explains how to identify separate elements of urban space structure. The first study describes the reasons for using the method to explore the city, and how the formation of the method began. The second study deals with the results of applying the method. The third study shows the variety of tasks that can be carried out using the method. The relevance of the chosen topic is proved by the current interest within the Russian town-planning community in various types of urban investigations.

THE APPLICATION OF THE PARTICIPATIVE DESIGN METHOD FOR PLANNING URBAN AREAS: THE “RED HOUSES” CASE-STUDY

Repina E.A., Zakharchenko M.A.

Abstract

This paper presents a possible model of a coherent plan for an area’s transformation, including a project for the planning and boundary setting of the area (i.e. defining the owner’s rights and the zones of responsibility) and an improvement project for two blocks located within the boundaries of Cheremshanskaya, Nagornaya and Voronezhskaya streets and Rotorny Lane, where an active community of residents has recently formed. The “Red Houses” pilot project uses innovative technologies of town regulation (the technology of participation, taking into account historic, social, geographical identities). If successful, this model may serve as an example for future improvement of areas of standard development that date back to different époques, since in Russia there are no established mechanisms for making conflict-free and legally legitimate decisions related to the development of areas.

THE INTERACTION OF THE CITY WITH NATURE

Lekareva N.A.

Abstract

The article discusses the integration of the principles and techniques of landscape design in the creation of a comfortable urban environment. The characteristics of the urban environment required for certification of projects according to “green” standards accepted in international practice are detailed. A landscaping concept is presented for the structural formation of the modern city, built on a synthesis of nature and urban structure, with its landscape and ecological potential. Data on the provision of green spaces in the various districts of the city of Samara is given. Ways to optimise the structure of urban landscaping by raising the priority of sanitary-ecological and aesthetic requirements for the development of the city are proposed.

SOCIAL SPACE AND THE METHODOLOGY OF ENVIRONMENTAL ARCHITECTURAL ACTIVITY

Zhogoleva A.V.

Abstract

The environment in which we live, which spatially and symbolically expresses the reality of the formation of value relationships, is the most important context of modern architecture. It restores architecture to traditional culture with all the richness of human relations and the uniqueness of place. Through the appropriation of the living environment, a way of understanding is formed which conceives of architectural activity as the simultaneous coexistence of different architectural movements manifested to varying degrees within existing contexts.

THE CITY & PEOPLE

THE FORMATION OF URBAN LOCALES

Malakhov S.A., Adamova E.A.

Abstract

This article presents analysis of the spontaneous development of urban locales and the possible influence of form and structure on this process. The form of boundaries acts as the primary and fundamental element for the self-identification of territory. It is important to select the size and opposition of projects through the cultural dialectic ‘top-down’ vs. ‘bottomup’. The historical grain of the city blocks of Samara offer instruction for new experiments in the creation of territories for spontaneous development on new urban sites.

HISTORY AS A POST-PROJECT PHENOMENON

Malakhov S.A., Repina E.A., Weyers O.

Abstract

The official date of the birth of the “Post-project” method may be considered the date of publication of the article by Bart Goldhoorn in the magazine «Project Russia» №3, 2001. The author admitted that Malakhov and Repina had discovered a fundamentally new cultural method and program, based on the restoration of a literarily meaningful «project story» of objects that were built, in fact, without any professional concepts. Post-project re-analyzes the content of photos taken in reality, creating a cultural myth about special architects and customers, about intriguing qualities of the object that are hidden from the viewer and about a special way of life of the characters of these stories. Thus, architecture obtains the status of a cultural phenomenon, for which purpose the concern ‘what happened first: the construction or the design?’ it is not fundamental. Several successful presentations of the “Post-project” method (in Moscow, Rotterdam, London, Sapporo) have confirmed the discovery’s cultural and professional value.

«ST VEST-AZIYA» TECHNOPARK SAMARA 2007 - A JUSTIFICATION

Malakhov S.A.

Abstract

The Samara Technopark (ST) project designed between 2005 and 2007 by architectural practice Buro Kovcheg (ARK) won the grand-prix at the Arkhit ’07 competition; however, despite all permissions having been granted and construction worked commenced, the project was abandoned in the run-up to the 2018 World Cup for a completely different approach in developed in the strategy for the appropriation of the territory of the Radio Centre. This article carefully analyses several of the key ideas of the ST, including analogies with the typology of the ideal city. The project is based on a multi-layered mapping of natural and geometric grids and elements. Formally, the technopark is based as much as possible on hand-drawn contours, lending the whole complex the appearance of a natural archipelago. The ST project is in the tradition of the philosopher Aureli and architect Aldo Rossi: architecture embodies the city in articulated form, and in turn the city becomes architecture - the space of intrigue, the genius loci.

THE DESIGN PRINCIPLES OF PARAMETRIC ARCHITECTURE

Shchapova A.O.

Abstract

Parametrism originates from the mid-twentieth century and in the twenty-first century it is already considered a style and is influential in the projects of many innovative architects. In 2009, Zaha Hadid and Patrick Schumacher published a manifesto of parametrics, defining it as a style with its main definitions and criteria. The past 90 years have witnessed active development of the parametric approach. The idea that our world is «woven» from nonlinear, complex, self-organizing materials, systems and processes emerges, which in turn is picked up by the architect-innovators. This work considers the agreement of form and function in their buildings, the methodologies applied in design and the current relevance of the approach.

MOBILE ARCHITECTURE AS TYPOLOGY: THE KS-13 CASE STUDY

Rakov A.P.

Abstract

The typology ‘mobile architecture’ includes walking structures. This article discusses existing architectural, design, artistic and inventing practice in walking structures and the application of the KS-13 kinematic scheme in mobile walking structures. The conversion of rotary motion into a step allows for usable space beneath the walking legs of the structures. Other similar schemes have the moving parts fixed about the level of the connection of the walking legs to the structure. In addition to the kinematic scheme, the article considers the construction of these structures.

CITY WITHOUT THE CITY

THE COMMUNICATIVE QUALITIES OF ANONYMOUS ARCHITECTURE

Repina E.A., Romanova D.N.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the communicative possibilities of vernacular architecture. Anonymous architecture is typologically extremely diverse, including: the phenomenon of the «dacha», country houses, cottages, «strange objects», private sectors within urban areas, pre-revolutionary petty-bourgeoisie development, self-made landscaping and object design, country houses, seasonal architecture etc. The hypothesis is made that the diverse typologies of vernacular architecture influence its communicative potential. The investigation of anonymous architecture is not restricted to the scale of architecture - the field of research includes the urban environment, people’s way of life and the world of objects. This paper tries to reveal the particularity of architectural language taking examples of different types of environment.

STRATEGIES FOR INHABITION AND ALTERNATIVE CONSTRUCTION SCENARIOS FOR THE LUNAR ENVIRONMENT

Malakhov S.A., Rakov A.P., Samsonova D.A.

Abstract

The appearance of a base on the Moon will be preceded by experimental uninhabited artificial masonry object-monuments. The first habitable objects on the Moon will have massive and durable protection from meteorites and radiation. Specialised 3D printers will be used to create artificial stone fixtures on the surface of the Moon. The local building material - a reconstituted stone from lunar soil - will be used to form the infrastructure for lunar settlements. The first stone blocks will be produced using 3D printing technology projecting solar rays on the lunar soil. For the first time in history construction robots will build artificial objects on the surface of the Moon. Stone elements will be required for the protection of living modules delivered from Earth. The main idea of the article is that through the use of stone elements for the protection and operation of lunar settlements architecture returns to the Orders of antiquity.

«TECHNOLOGICAL STRATEGY» AS A GENRE OF COMPUTER GAMES AND VIRTUAL EXPERIMENTS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MOON

Malakhov S.A., Rakov A.P., Matkarimova R.P.

Abstract

This article relates the beginning of work on the creation of a computer game. The genre of this game is ‘technological strategy’ with elements of action. This game should become the beginning of research work aimed at the development of the lunar environment. The computer helps us to create a virtual model, to collect a large amount of statistical data on the effectiveness of different models of behavior and thus evaluate the effectiveness of environmental policies. In the twenty-first century, the dream of space cities is starting to come true. Enthusiasts in different parts of the world continue to dream of the Moon as home. The quantity and quality of projects dedicated to the development of the satellite takes the hypothesis about the possibility of creating a lunar settlement to a whole new level - now clearly visible, even down to the stages of this work. Environmental strategy and play are closely linked. The game development process includes the development of print and virtual publications, the development of high-grade offline and online applications as well as short movies.

PRINCIPLES FOR THE DESIGN OF RESIDENTIAL COMPLEXES IN MODERN CONDITIONS

Alakritsky M.A.

Abstract

Over the past two decades the paradigm of residential complex design has changed. The real estate market dictates its own rules for the formation of the architectural space of residential complexes. In modern conditions priorities from the standpoint of economic efficiency are the intensification of land use and the acceleration of the process of design and implementation. Thus, these problems and patterns lead to the need of finding alternative ways and problem-oriented approaches aimed at the reappraisal of values in the organization of the living environment, the formulation of the modern principles of the living environment, improvement of its spatial characteristics and its “humane” qualities of in the context of aggressive external factors and constraints.

THE FORMATION OF DESIGN SOLUTIONS FOR ARCHITECTURAL LIGHTING

Pozhitkova L.O.

Abstract

The article is devoted to the concept of light in architecture as seem in the reconstruction of the Chamber Theatre in Ekaterinburg. The basic principle is to differentiate the building from the surrounding area and preserve the harmony of the image at night to create a unity of perception of the site. To achieve this effect on the facade the brightness distribution is modelled on daylight, the direction of the light is from the bottom up, with some structural elements remaining dark. Firstly, location is considered, the surrounding buildings and the plastic properties of the Chamber Theatre, which is the main task facing the author, the architectural lighting of the Chamber Theatre building and outdoor lighting of the adjacent territory in front of the theatre.

THE APPLICATION OF THE IDENTICAL PROPERTIES OF GOTHIC ARCHITECTURE AND THE ARCHITECTURE OF BIONICS IN THE FORMATION OF THE PHILHARMONIC COMPLEX DESIGN CONCEPT IN EKATERINBURG

Burnasheva M.M.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to identify identical principles inherent in the architecture of Gothic and Bionic style public buildings, which then become the conceptual basis for the design of the Philharmonic complex in the city of Ekaterinburg. The concept for the Philharmonic complex was based on a project brief provided by N.I. Koloturskiy. In the project the principle «inside-out» is adopted in an attempt to achieve stylistic and conceptual unity of the external and internal spaces. The dynamics and rhythm of the compositional axes and dominant forms respond to the trajectory of occupant movement and behaviour scenarios in the context of a cultural-recreational complex.
