The phenomenon of spontaneous commemoration: its essence, types, and functions

Abstract

The paper deals with the phenomenon of spontaneous (or “grass-roots”) commemoration, which has been rather poorly studied in both Russian and foreign research practices. The subjects of spontaneous commemoration may be individuals (“local initiative commemoration”), social groups (“collective initiative commemoration”), and any undifferentiated generalised subjects (“social initiative commemoration”). The important functions of the commemoration include integration and identification, as well as indicative, regulative, and expressive functions.

On museum ontology: history, memory, zeitregime

Abstract

Museum as the phenomenon receives various views in today’s scholarly literature; yet, no holistic philosophical concept of it has been developed so far. The present research deals with the issue of the foundations of museum as a social institution aiming to represent the past. Emergence and development of such an institution has become a result of the rise and fall of the “time regime of modernity” (das Zeitregime der Moderne). The following two types of museum are highlighted: (1) traditional museum and (2) memorial museum. The idea of traditional museum is, so to speak, the “conserving oblivion,” whereas the idea of memorial museum is a kind of “retentive remembrance.”

Death, immortality and cosmos: William S. Burroughs about the fears of today

The article deals with the specificities of interpreting the topics of death, immortality, virus, and language in the works of William S. Burroughs (1914–1997), an American writer and philosopher. Many of his thoughts have anticipated the fears of our days. At the same time, both originality and topicality of the issues posed by the writer in his novels and essays allow to consider him an original thinker.

The development of G.N. Zhuravlyov’s unique style during his work on the icon The image of the holy great martyr George The Victorious

Abstract

This study focuses on some special features of the style of the image of St. George the Victorious in G.N. Zhuravlyov’s iconography. As a result of this analysis, some fundamental iconographic reference points of the distinctive painter, undoubtedly influenced by the artworks of the renowned craftsmen of the Syzran iconography centre, have been identified. The image of the Holy Great Martyr George the Victorious is special not only in Zhuravlyov’s series of iconographic works featuring such revered warriors as St. Alexandre Nevsky and St. Michael the Archangel but also in his oeuvre in general. The images illustrating this article are published for the first time.

Shostakovich’s unfinished opera The Gamblers: an artist’s unfinished concept and approaches to the reconstruction of the whole

Abstract

The article deals with the issue of reconstructing Shostakovich’s unfinished opera The Gamblers. An increasing number of recent productions of The Gamblers shows not only the interest for this masterpiece but also the vast artistic potential inherent to the very fact that the opera is incomplete, which itself opens a range of possibilities to complete it. Three types of the reconstruction of The Gamblers are considered: 1) the completion of Act One by the conductor Gennady Rozhdestvensky; 2) the complete reconstruction of an entire opera (Acts Two and Three) by Krzysztof Meyer; 3) the staged version of the opera by Yuri Aleksandrov (director) and Yuri Dimitrin (scriptwriter).

Lenin’s image in music as the artifact of the Soviet culture and history

Abstract

The article deals with the samples of expressing Lenin’s image in music as peculiar artifacts of culture and history that contributed a lot to the development of both Soviet Russian and global art of music. Having passed the officialdom of their time period, most of these artworks are characterized by their topicality and clearly expressed historicism, as well as by their truthful reflection of reality and dramatic conceptuality. They are featured by innovative melodies, harmonies and Formbildung, as well as progressive musical idioms and national originality. Not only do these works reflect the composers’ inner world but also demonstrate their depth and the bright personalities of their authors.

Book publishing in the Saratov province of 1918–28 as an object of scholarly research

Abstract

The study contains an overview of publications on the development of publishing houses, printing enterprises and book products of the Saratov Province in the first decade of the Soviet power. The description of scholarly monographs, articles and bibliographic manuals, fully or partially related to the topic, is given. Individual scholars’ contribution to the study of the initial period of the Soviet book publishing in Saratov and the local towns of the Saratov Province is assessed. The place of works on the history of the Saratov bookishness in 1918–28 is shown in a series of similar studies performed in other regions particularly and in the RSFSR generally.

Edification of Catherine II for the noble youth sent to foreign lands for training

Abstract

The paper deals with an analysis of a unique undated historical source stored in Russia’s State Archives of Ancient Acts, namely: “Edification, with the autograph of Catherine II, in the form of rules for the noble youth sent to foreign lands for training.” The Empress’s contradictory pedagogical views on upbringing and educating the young representatives of Russia’s noble families are shown. Europe’s democratic morals of that period of history proved to be incompatible with the image of a law-abiding subject of the state with absolute monarchy.

Special effects of the soviet cinema: a method of finishing drawing

Abstract

A number of unique documents about the history of the Soviet cinema have been preserved by the collection of the USSR Research Institute for Cinema and Photography at Russian State Archive in Samara. This publication contains a “Technological Note” describing a method of composite shot, namely: finishing drawing. The main idea of this method is that a frame segment is combined with a drawing. The author of the document, which was prepared for the film “Dorisovka” (“Finishing Drawing”), is N.S. Renkov. The first films shot in the USSR with the use of this method were Kadzheti (ქაჯეთი, 1937) and Ruslan and Lyudmila (1938).

Honored artist of the RSFSR Idea Alekseevna Erokhina

Abstract

The publication presents the author’s recollections about I.A. Erokhina (1940–2001), an opera singer and vocal teacher, the founder of the Academic Singing major at the Choral Conducting Department and the first Head of the Department of Vocal Performance Art of the Samara State Academy of Culture and Arts (currently the Samara State Institute of Culture). The main highlights of her artistic biography are analyzed. The continuity of Russia’s school of vocal art, which I.A. Erokhina belonged to, is shown together with the traditions of bel canto.
