DESIGNING A LEARNER THESAURUS AS A DIDACTIC MODULE FOR TRANSLATORS IN OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY

Sosnina E.P.

Abstract

This paper discusses the results of our research in developing the UNITECH training project and its information and linguistic support for the purposes of blended learning and teaching of foreign languages for special purposes and industrial translation. The project developed by our group aims not only to conduct research in the field of hybrid blended learning environments, to test and implement its methods and technologies, but also to present a toolkit of the UNITECH information system, as a platform for massive open online courses (MOOCs), and to support industry translation and foreign language instruction for special purposes. Designing of a e-learning domain-oriented thesaurus in Oil and Gas Industry is one of the research and applied results of the current work on our project and a module of the training course in translation in Oil and Gas Industry, where the semantic resources explicitly reflect the conceptual network of this industry. The studies of the paper focuse on approaches and methodology in selecting the terminology of Oil and Gas Industry and designing the structure of the learner thesaurus when analysing the terminology on the basis of the certain research content. We claim that one of the fundamental problems in developing the learners’ content when creating the special industry courses and professional resources is the need to narrow the terminological and thematic samples to the core industry concepts and their terminological units. As a result, we developed the Petroleum Engineering Thesaurus as a free open resource that includes web pages of dictionary articles to be used both independently and as a component of the didactic environment of our main module of the UNITECH platform with MOOC-courses in industrial translation.

Fomicheva A.D., Agafonov A.Y., Shilov Y.E.

Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of implicit learning of perceptual and categorical sequences. The purpose of the conducted research was to reveal the effect of unconscious acquisition of several regularities that belong to the different organization types. In the course of the experiment, the subjects were presented with words belonging to one of the categories (animate and inanimate) and colored in one of four colors (red, yellow, blue or green). The sequence of categories was organized according to a certain rule, or changed randomly. The colours were always alternating in certain order. At the training stage, it was necessary to react to the color of the word. At the test stage, participants were required to press the key corresponding to the word category. There was a significant dynamics in reducing the reaction time to color from the beginning to the end of the training stage. The results of the study showed that the presence or absence of the sequence of categories in the training process does not affect the performance of the test task.

The authors rely on their own methodology and compare "the chronotope of the city" and "the chronotope of the play". A key concept is "dvoeverie": the action takes place in Shakespeare's time, and at the same time on stage presents numerous signs and symbols of modernity. A collage of times, events, and forms one of the stylistic signs of the productions of Shakespeare in the twenty-first century. In the present article also discusses related forms of PR Shakespearean plays, particularly relevant for provincial theatres. As a useful experience describes the exhibition devoted to German productions of hamlet and was held in the Theatre Museum düsseldorf and Munich. It is also about the special "family" shows, hire famous movies and popular Internet games devoted to Shakespeare. Connecting different communicative forms remains true to the motto formulated by G. M. Kozintsev: "Our contemporary William Shakespeare." Conclusion: "Shekspiriana" the XXI century is being implemented in the performances and accompanying PR programmes: exhibitions, publications, intellectual online games. CULTURAL-CIVILIZATION PHENOMENON OF RUSSIAN INTELLIGENCE: FROM FOLKLORE TO LITERATURE (ON THE EXAMPLE OF THE TRACT OF S. ESENIN “KEYS OF MARIA”)

Dudareva M.A.

Abstract

Subject of the article: the phenomenon of the Russian intelligentsia. Object of the article: S. A. Yesenin's treatise “The Keys of Mary” (1918). The purpose of the project: to reveal the connection of the Russian intelligentsia with its roots, archaic cosmogonic representations of the world, which keeps folklore. The methodology of the work: a holistic analysis of Yesenin's philosophical poetic treatise in the light of transformations of the folk tradition and a ramified cultural and historical context involves an appeal to structural-typological, comparative-comparative, system-complex (cultural) research methods. Results of the work: an appeal to folklore allows you to see how a Russian person related himself to space, the sun and the moon, etc. Under folklore, it is proposed to consider not only textual formations, but also pre-genre forms, that is, myth, ritual, ritual. Yesenin also did not understand folklore narrowly, describing the axiological significance of embroidery and ornament. Scope of the results: the study of the phenomenon of the Russian intelligentsia in a wide cultural context with the use of Russian folklore material, in close connection with Russian philosophy and fiction, which form a special synthesis in Russian culture, you can understand the national image of the world, clarify the views on cultural civilizational phenomenon of the Russian intelligentsia. The results obtained may be of interest to both culturologists and literary critics, since Yesenin's treatise "The Keys of Mary" is often perceived either in philosophical space, or even as a poet’s fiction. Serious close attention to this text allows, following the author, to recreate the national image of the Russian intelligentsia, attached to archaic knowledge, with great memory. Conclusion: the scientific novelty of the study lies in rethinking the phenomenon of the Russian intelligentsia in a historiosophical context, in referring to the image of a Russian peasant endowed “from the ground” with special sacred knowledge, expressed in applied art, embroidery, ornament, carving, and building a hut. This conclusion is supported by references to German philosophy, the heritage of R. Steiner, who in his writings raised the question of the cosmic intelligentsia and its role in the development of mankind. We find a similar theory in Russian humanitarian thought in the works of G. S. Smirnov, who wrote about the “noospheric” history of mankind.

THE RIDDLE OF OEDIPUS: FEET, HORSEMAN AND LIVING STATUE

Pimonov V.I.

Abstract

Object of the article: The article discusses the structure and meaning of the riddle of the Sphinx in the Oedipus myth. Subject of the article: The author describes the semantic similarity between the riddle and Oedipus, based on the common motif of the feet. The riddle of the Sphinx and Oedipus's answer to it are analyzed as a single narrative sequence, consisting of two descriptions of the riddle's object: one figurative - of the developmental stages of human life; one literal - of the figure of a horseman, conveying one of the central motifs which repeats itself throughout the story of Oedipus. This recent finding indicates an added dramatic motif to underscore the decline and disgrace of the tragic figure of Oedipus. Goal of the research: The author argues that the motif of a horseman emerges in the riddle as a result of combining the properties from two objects belonging to different classes (a “two-footed” creature - a baby, human being; with a “four-footed” creature - an animal, e.g., horse) into one single object. This becomes possible due to the predicate ὀχούμενον, a participle form of the verb ὀχέω, which has various meanings: “ride”, ”let another ride”, ”have oneself borne”, ”to be borne or carried”, for example, on a horse's back. The article shows that the same pattern, based on the combination of a two-footed (human being) with a four-footed (animal) into a single image of a horseman, is reproduced and revealed at different levels of the myth. As the story unfolds, the motif of a horseman, camouflaged in the riddle of the Sphinx, develops and reveals itself many times in different images: ”Laius riding a horse-drawn chariot”, ”Ismene riding on a horse”, before it culminates at the end of Oedupus's life in the equestrian statue of Colonus. Research methodology: The author employs linguistic data and adopts a structural-semantic approach in his analysis. Results: The article shows that the image of a horseman, coded in the riddle by merging the properties of two objects - “two-footed” (human being) and “four-footed” (animal) - is a symbolic microcosm in which the macrocosm of the myth as well as of its central figures - Oedipus and the Sphinx - are reflected. Analyzing the common features of the equestrian statue of Colonus and the image of the Sphinx, the author argues that the motif of a “horseman” is related to the motif of a “living statue” through the ability to use “voice”. Field of application: literary studies, structural poetics, mythological studies, classics. Conclusion: The motif of a centaur-like horseman (as a combination of “human” and “animal”) concealed in the riddle of the Sphinx, reappears and repeats itself throughout the story. This recurrent motif foreshadows the decline and disgrace of the tragic hero who violates the separation of human and animal by committing patricide and incest, thus becoming half-human and half-animal. The same motif recapitulates at the end of the story in the centaur-like statue of Colonus atop a horse, who embodies Poseidon, the god of horses and the guardian of the sacred site where Oedipus finds his final resting place after a long pilgrimage from pollution to rutual purification. The recurrent horseman motif illuminates the sub-surface Oedipus's drama containing the riddle of the ambiguity between human, animal and god.
