Zhuravlev A.P.

Abstract

The article deals with the issues of working out some criteria that would allow an English teacher to perform quick and effective sorting of lexical material (in form of song lyrics and poems in English) for further use as the material for teaching English lexis and pronunciation. Modern trends in teaching foreign languages show that non-standard methods of teaching become more and more popular as they help to simplify the process of learning a foreign language by linking it to creative element. Modern technology and unlimited access to the Internet make it easier for people from different countries to communicate; it brings learning English to a completely new level. Direct knowledge of culture and traditions of other countries make people more motivated for learning foreign languages. As the result of swift change of modern educational trends, traditional teaching methods using textbooks and dictionaries pale into significance. Today modern methods of learning foreign languages become more and more relevant; these methods are aimed at both developing lasting speech skills and forming linguistic, social, cultural, speech and cognitive competences according to the Russian Federal Educational Standard. In order to bring out the best in their learners, many English teachers try to use these new developments and sets of exercises based on modern trends. But this requires much more teaching materials and best practice that would allow to enhance the efficiency of teaching. As one of the ways of solving this problem, a number of criteria for sorting out the texts of authentic songs and poems in English was developed by the author of this article. The given criteria are applicable to essentially every song or poem and, consequently, can be used by the English teachers during their classes. Moreover, these criteria can be relatively easily adapted to any other foreign language.

NARRATIVE ORGANIZATION OF ANIMATION FILM by J. - F. LAGIONI «THE PAINTING»

Abramovskikh E.V.

Abstract

The article is the first attempt at a narrative study of an animated film. The film directed by Jean-Francois Lagioni «The Painting» (2011) (scriptwriters - Stephanie Shi, Jean-Francois Lagioni, Anik Leray) is considered as a complex meta-narration. The author relies on the methodological principles of the narrative analysis of the text and operates with the key categories: «the event that is described in the text» and «the event of the story itself» (MM Bakhtin). As a means of organizing the narrative of an animated film, “signs of signs” (Y.M. Lotman) - works of painting - «revived pictures» and the journey of heroes through the multiple artistic worlds created by the Artist are investigated. The sources of the style of the animated film are revealed - the works of Chagall, Matisse, Picasso, Modigliani. In the course of analyzing the narrative structure of an animated film, it was fundamental to turn to the aesthetic concepts of «serial thinking» and non-finito text. Several narrative levels are highlighted, each of which is built according to its own laws: events unfolding in the artist's unfinished painting; the heroes' journey through other paintings by the artist (completed and unfinished) in the Artist's House and Studio; exit to the World of the Artist who has forgotten about his painting. The narrative organization of the animated film «The Painting» is based on the interconnection and interdependence of elements of different narrative levels.

TWO RUSSIAN NOVELS ABOUT “RUSSIAN” GERMANS

Bakalov A.S., Bakalova Z.N.

Abstract

Article contains an analysis of problems and style of two Russian novels about German settlers on the Low Volga shores (18th century) and their descendants (20th century). The first of the book is a historical novel “Icebergs of Colonization” by A. Schneider-Strem’akova created on the basis of a chronicle diary of her ancestor A.Schneider (18th century) and edited together with the ancestor’s diary in Russia (2011, 2014) and Germany (2014). Her novel tracks down the history of the Volga colony Marienthal (now settlement Sovetsky) and is dedicated to problems of its adaptation to Russian conditions. The artificial time of her opus is 1764 till the beginning of 19th century. This book is being compared with the novel “My own Children” by G.Yakhina (2020) which is a rather specific chronicle of another German Volga colony Gnadenthal (now Gennadyevo) during two Soviet prewar decades. The plot of Yakhina’s novel reveals the family tragedy of the teacher Yacob Bach on the background of the disaster in his colony and the common tragedy of German settlements in Soviet Russia at all. The analysis exposes common features of both compared novels and their mental and stylistic difference.

THE MOTIVE OF THE CITIZENSHIP OF THE PROVINCIAL NOBILITY LATE XVIII - BEGINNING XIX CENTURIES (ON THE MATERIAL OF "DAY NOTES" BY PETER OZNOBISHIN)

Buranok O.M., Buranok A.O.

Abstract

In this article, the authors come to the conclusion that the "Daily Notes" by Pyotr Oznobishin, which they are examining, only at first glance represent a set of disparate notes: notes from day to day according to the same scenario. But the theory of the text shows that the "Notes" represent a certain meaningful integrity, with all the diversity of facts, phenomena, remarks, but all this is consolidated by the image of the author-narrator. "Notes" secretly, latently, but convey the atmosphere of the Pavlovian era: we feel the threshold of the historical transition from the "eighteenth" century to the Alexander era. Brought up in an enlightened, albeit provincial noble environment, Pyotr Nikanorovich is able, if not to understand, then to feel the "change of milestones." At the same time, he has a fairly wide outlook: due to the peculiarities of the service, he moves up and down the Volga from city to city, from Kazan to Astrakhan. The “breakthrough man” is especially experiencing a change of milestones, providing a crossroads of cultures. And about this we are told not only by synopsis, stories, literary texts ..., but also diaries, memoirs, and in this case "Notes" clearly reflect the era of breakdown: historical facts are submitted through a "living" witness of the breakdown. History is comprehended not only by “out-of-the-box” personalities, as M.N. Virolainen, but also by such ordinary, ordinary people as P.N. Oznobishin. In addition, the authors polemicize with the Polish researcher Eliza Malek, who argued that "despite all the efforts of the writers and the authorities, the noblemen's withdrawal from the service of the state was 'rampant'." Long-term studies of the authors show that some part of the Russian nobility, mainly of the capital, aspired to be in "idleness and festivity, ... gravitated to all types of play and fun", but the absolute majority of both the capital, and especially the provincial nobility, served on military and civil service. And this is a vivid confirmation of the huge family of the Penza-Simbirsk nobles of the Oznobishins. Particular interest "Day Notes" by P.N. Oznobishin is presented for specialists due to the fact that this is a purely archival material and is being introduced into scientific circulation for the first time by us.

WESTERN EUROPEAN AND RUSSIAN PRE-ROMANTISM: GENERAL AND SPECIAL

Vershinin I.V., Buranok O.M.

Abstract

This article examines the problem of the genesis of romanticism, which is associated with a more in-depth approach to the literature of this trend in recent years and with the revision of a number of provisions of this phenomenon. At the same time, the solution to the problem, as it turned out, lies in the presentation of a clear picture of the phenomena preceding romanticism. The main feature of the literary movements and arts of this period is their close interaction and interweaving, representing a complex diversity of artistic life. Thus, as we can assume, all kinds of contradictions appeared in the study of both the creative heritage and trends and directions. In this regard, scientists are forced to either "tie" this or that art worker to a certain direction or school, or not consider this practice. The authors refer, in particular, to the concept of the world and man in pre-romanticism - not only in literature, but also in other forms of art; the question is raised of how the pre-romantic tendencies of aesthetics and art were formed. The pre-romantic tendencies, motives and plots of Russian literature in the 50s of the 18th century were formed primarily by the translation culture, and in this regard, special attention is paid to the activities of Nikanor Oznobishin. In spite of the far-fetched "lagging behind", Russian culture of the mid-18th century quite fit into the cultural layer of contemporary Europe. Russia took an active part in European literary life. Her path from classicism to romanticism was swift and successful, which was facilitated by the Europeanization of Russian culture (almost forcibly imposed by Peter I and setting the tone for the entire 18th century) and translation culture, which reached a high level in the middle of the century.

THE RUSSIAN-INDIAN INTERCONNECTIONS OF THE TIME OF THE INDO-SLAVIC COMMUNITY

Denissov D.V.

Abstract

The main cultural interconnections of Ancient Russia and Ancient India after the adoption of Christianity were carried out in the translated literature tradition, including translations from Arabic. In order to study the earlier stages of forming the Slavic community on the territory of the Russian Plain, researchers traditionally use the works of Arab, Greek and European travelers and historians. The few studies indicate that many of modern Russian toponyms and hydronyms are derived from Sanskrit. Some of them make reference to the ancient Indian mythological figures. This paper proposes to use the chapters of “The Book of the Forest”, the third book of the ancient Indian epic “Mahааbhааrat”, in which five pааndavas and their common wife make a pilgrimage to Mount Gandha-mааdana as a source of information about the period of the Indo-Slavic community. The interconnections are based on the north-south orientation of this mountain, its underground wealth (ores and precious stones), numerous lakes and polar realities of the Northern Urals. The analysis reveals a community of motives in “The Mahааbhааrata” and the Russian epics “Father of Svyatogor and Ilya Muromets” and “Death of Svyatogor” and indicates three sources of Svyatogor's character. It also identifies the community of the doctrine of cognition set forth during one of the meetings on Mount Gandha-mааdana and Severodvinsk painting technique. In addition, attention is paid to a remarkably accurate description of the algorithms of world military confrontation in the ancient Indian epic, expressed in the parallelism between some events of the Mahааbhааrata battle and World War II.

SOURCES ON THE TOPIC OF SOCIO-CULTURAL PROCESSES OF THE "THAW" PERIOD 1953-1964 (BASED ON THE MATERIALS OF KUIBYSHEV AND THE KUIBYSHEV REGION)

Lomakin A.V., Buranok A.O.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to establish the range of historical sources necessary for studying the problem of socio-cultural processes of the "thaw" period of 1953-1964, which took place in Kuibyshev and the Kuibyshev region. The authors systematize historical sources on this issue, give them a brief description and recommendations for use. Despite the regional boundaries of the problem, research on this topic is impossible without attracting materials from other regions, especially from the "capitals": Moscow and Leningrad. Thus, the party and government records, especially the protocols of the ideological commissions, are of great importance. Materials from the following archives are recommended for active involvement on all-Union issues: GARF, RGALI; on local issues: TSGASO, SOGASPI. Interesting information can provide an analysis of memoirs and memories (especially artists), we recommend that you consider the sources of personal origin in comparison: "Metropolitan - local". The researcher should also pay attention to attracting cultural works, especially cinematography, as sources: despite the complexity of analyzing such sources, they can deepen the General understanding of the problem. However, the main type of sources on the topic of socio-cultural processes is the local-level periodical press. In addition to reflecting the official orders of the government and the party, it also reflects the perception of these orders. The Newspapers of the studied period publish articles about all the most important social and cultural events of the city and region, as well as interviews and appeals of both administrative figures and ordinary citizens.

PEOPLE AND DUMMIES (THE POETICS OF V. KATAEV’S PLAY “THE GENERAL STORE”)

Shelenok М.А.

Abstract

The article deals with the manuscript (typewriting) of V.P. Kataev’s lesser-known comedy written in verse form called “The General Store” (1929). Objects of the author’s irony are revealed. Special attention is given to the tragedy of “have-beens” who failed to adapt and happened to become “superfluous” people in the post-revolution era. The analysis of the play demonstrates a vaudevillian nature of the plot: the action is based on confusion and accident that enhance dynamics and maintain general comic environment of the literary work. The play-writer incorporates the elements of fantasy (fairytale poetics) that not only contributes to the entertainment value, but also gives the opportunity to expand the genre boundaries. Kataev practically avoids a straightforward satire and moralizing (unlike in “The Embezzlers” (1927) and the comedies of the 1930es). “The General Store” manifests the acknowledgment of an ordinary person’s “truth”: the main characters of the play look naïve and funny, but they are not judged by the moral and ideological standards of the Soviet times.

THE THEME OF THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION IN THE EARLY WORKS OF A.N. TOLSTOY

Agalakov D.V.

Abstract

In this article, the author examines the stories of A.N. Tolstoy's "Arkhip" and "Matchmaking" are early works where the writer creates a universal world, which he knew and loved so well, which nourished it with his joys and sorrows. The author comes to the conclusion that no matter how Marxist Countess Alexandra Leontievna Tolstaya, the mother of Alexei Tolstoy, was, Russia during the civil war horrified both Bunin and Tolstoy. The stories "Arkhip" and "Matchmaking" seem to be deliberately intertwined into one bare nerve that goes much deeper than the modern author of the class struggle, new literary trends - he goes into the depths of the people's body, through Pugachevism and rashness, hundreds of years ago, almost into primitive savagery, opening up dark and destructive forces for any civilization, for the very soul of man.

THE PROPHETIC ROLE OF THE HERO'S NAME IN THE STORY OF OEDIPUS

Pimonov V.I.

Abstract

Object of the article: This study illuminates the prophetic role of the name Οἰδίπους in the Oedipus story. Subject of the article: The author focuses on the hidden meanings of the hero's name and manifestation of those meanings in the plot through foreshadowing. Proceeding from the structural and semantic similarity between the name of Oedipus and the riddle of the Sphinx, the author argues that the solution to the riddle is hidden in the hero's name. Purpose of research: The article describes the prophetic function of the name Οἰδίπους and shows how it is realized in the plot. Research methods: The author uses linguistic data (Ancient Greek) and applies a structural-semantic approach. Results: The article shows that the name of Oedipus (Οἰδίπους) contains the plot of the Oedipus story in a reduced form and foreshadows the main motifs of vision-blindness, knowledge-ignorance, crime-punishment, as well as the future actions of the hero. In an indirect way the hero's name is connected to the revenge motif, which foreshadows the act of vengeance - the self-blinding of Oedipus. Field of application: literary studies, structural poetics, classics. Conclusion: The author argues that as the story of Oedipus unfolds, it reveals the hidden meanings contained in the hero's name. The inner dynamics of the plot is based on the prophetic function of the name Οἰδίπους which foreshadows the upcoming events and actions of the hero. For their help and encouragement, I am indebted to Dan Whitman and Svetlana Gracheva.
